Live Video: Gold Streets – “Funny Cry Happy”

April 25th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in gold streets, live shows, live video

Gold Streets played last Thursday at Union Pool as part of Jezebel Music’s Feature Show. It was a crowded room and the band treated everyone to quite a set. Below is video of “Funny Cry Happy,” a song off their new album, Looks Like Fireflies, which is out at the beginning of May (but already available for download at echospin). We’ll be writing about the album soon, but can tell you now that we’ve listened to it an insane number of times and only enjoy it more with each listening.

Pay attention to the two stop/starts in the second half of the song. If you listen closely you’ll hear the audience go nuts — it’s sort of hard to hear because there’s this band playing their asses off, but it was quite impressive.

Live Video: Mancino – “Hetchie Hutchie Footchie”

April 24th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in hot rocks party, live shows, live video, mancino, parties

Mancino’s EP, Dear International,, at times reminded us of Franz Ferdinand. But we’ve since realized, due in no small part to their recently released full-length — Manners Matter — that, if you bypass that possible medium and head back to the true source of influence for the band, you’ll likely end up looking straight into the eyes of Ray Davies and company. Mancino has the same rollicking playfulness The Kinks so often put on display, yet, unlike the wannabes, they also manage to capture the dark edginess, spanning a range of mild to outright cynical, that made The Kinks so special and interesting.

And they put on one hell of a live show:

What’s with the kazoo? Well, they normally use a recorder, but it decided to roll off the stage during load in or sound check and was lost to one of the many crevices around the stage. The guys were able to find a kazoo at a nearby store and made nice use of it. They even repeated the substitution at their next show with another recorder readily available to play. Mancino is cool. Mancino likes the kazoo. Therefore, the kazoo is cool. Logic has dictated.

Live Video: The Bosch – “Paperback”

April 23rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in hot rocks party, live shows, live video, parties

The Bosch play retro rock and roll and they play it well. The band was in top form last weekend at Hot Rocks as they brought their surf and garage tinged sound to a crowded room and kept the night’s energy at high levels. Need proof? Well, fine, then — look at this:

“Paperback” is from The Bosch’s upcoming album.

Chop Shop

April 19th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Chop Shop, hot rocks party, live shows, mp3s, parties

We recently had the pleasure of meeting a relatively new band called Chop Shop and having them play the Hot Rocks Party, which we’ve been booking. And we can now say we’re thoroughly impressed with both their recordings and their live show.

Here’s a video from their performance (the first of many videos we plan on posting in the future):

Chop Shop’s sound is reminiscent of R.E.M. or early Radiohead, with strokes of Joy Division or Interpol. We suggest you download the tracks below which, while they may officially constitute a demo, really project a refreshingly self-assured confidence not always present in young groups.

“Crickets”

“Sitting In A Circle”

“Caves N’ Caves”

“Break Beat”
