CMJ Preview: Mancino

We checked out Mancino last night at the Indaba Music/Underrated Magazine loft party. Unfortunately, the free beer was gone, but the band was great. They played a few new songs and we’re really looking forward to hearing those, in addition to some more familiar favorites from their full-length and EP on Saturday.
Here’s our brief review of the band currently featured in The Deli Magazine:
Anyone who might attempt to trace the influences of Mancino back to the roots will likely end up looking straight into the eyes of Ray Davies and company. The band demonstrates the same rollicking playfulness The Kinks so often put on display. But unlike the many wannabes, they also manage to capture the dark edginess — spanning a range of mild to outright cynical — that made The Kinks so special and interesting. Unafraid to take chances, they are the rare type of band that can make a recorder or kazoo seem perfectly logical in a dance song (“Hethcie Hutchie Footchie”) and a glockenspiel seem oddly ominous (“Circus Scabs”) just as easily as they can play the hell out of a power trio rock groove.
Mancino will be playing at the StereoactiveNYC/Hot Rocks Party Official CMJ Showcase on Saturday, October 20th at The Delancey in NYC. The event is co-sponsored by DigitalFreedom.org.
