Photos: Le Rug at Hot Rocks

February 19th, 2008 Posted in Hot Rocks Party, Le Rug, Renminbi, live shows, parties, photos

We first found out about Le Rug because Lisa Liu of Renminbi was playing guitar with them. So we took a listen on the old MySpace and were impressed enough to pretty much immediately ask them to play a show we were setting up, not really knowing what to expect live, but sure it would be pretty interesting. And it was — Le Rug put on one hell of a show. Ray Weiss leads a full-frontal sonic, energetic assault. But there’s order to the seeming chaos. Everyone in the band knows how to play big without overplaying and make it all fit together without being messy. Perhaps the best sign of their collective skill is that they played the show with two drummers who were both obviously quite capable of beating the hell out of their drums, yet neither overdid it. Then we snagged a copy of their album, Bleenex — on which Weiss plays most of the instruments himself — and found ourselves doubly impressed. Weiss, formerly of The Medics, definitely poured himself into this album (read the band bio) and the more we listen, the more we want to listen.

Here are some photos of the band at the February 2nd Hot Rocks Party at The Delancey, with more shots available on Flickr:
