Locket // StereoactiveNYC CMJ Showcase Preview + 2 new mp3s
Locket is a band that has made great strides in the time we’ve known them. When we first saw them back in early 2008, they were a two-piece featuring bass and drums. The next time we saw them, they’d added a guitar. And within a show or two of that they’d added a keyboardist. And while the additions weren’t absolutely necessary — bass and drums are perfectly fine — they were also not extraneous. The new sounds were incorporated naturally and only helped to highlight the excellent song-writing that was already going on while allowing for even further opportunities as they’ve continued forward. This band did and still does write tunes so catchy that they will quite likely be stuck in your head for days after hearing them. Now, they’ve just finished recording their first set of songs, which they’re planning to release soon.
They’ll be performing at the StereoactiveNYC Official CMJ Showcase at the Delancey on Saturday (7:30pm) and, we’re told, they’ll have samplers available with perhaps four or five songs from the upcoming release. And they’ve been so kind as to allow us to post a couple of those tracks here for you to preview:
Here’s what CMJ had to say about them:
“A simmering miasma of crunchy guitar-centric indie-pop and simple rock.”
And here’s what we said about the band when we first reviewed them:
“Imagine one of those slightly bubblegummy singer-songwriter types you might come across at a college open mic night — the ones with the lyrics that make you cringe unless you’ve been through the same semi-fratboy years they went through. Locket is pretty much the exact opposite of that — almost as if they stood up during one of those sets, walked out in disgust and formed a band in reaction to it. There is a certain innocence to their music, but it’s wrapped in a dark edginess that makes for an interesting sound.”
