Announcement: chopshop CD Release Party presented by StereoactiveNYC

090207-chopshopchshow-web

Back when we were first starting to book bands for the Hot Rocks Party, we had Mancino booked to play a date and asked them if there was anyone in particular they’d like to play with. Their suggestion was chopshop. After listening to the band’s impressive first demos, we were interested and invited them to join the bill. And after hearing them play live at the show, we were convinced these guys were one extremely talented group of musicians. Eventually, they played a couple more StereoactiveNYC-sponsored events, but then, unfortunately, had to take a rather long hiatus from playing live due to some unfortunate circumstances.

So chopshop, at this point, has not played a show since late 2007, but has managed to make fine use of their time, having spent it in their studio crafting an eleven song LP. Hugs And Hand Shakes showcases the energetic, skilled band we were first introduced to nearly two years ago and manages to show off a range of dynamic arrangement, songwriting, and production skills only hinted at in those early —  still impressive — demos. Even without the ongoing history we have with the band, StereoactiveNYC would be proud to present the CD release party we’ve helped them to organize for this coming Saturday night. The band will be joined by friends Mancino, Gold Streets, and Coyote Eyes, with DJed music before, between, and after the bands courtesy of our friends over at The Music Slut.

Congratulations to chopshop for sticking with this and getting it done. And welcome back.

Fugazi Covers Project: Musicians Wanted

May 15th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in gold streets, man in gray, recording, zero spanish

Christina DaCosta (whom you may know from Man In Gray), Phil Rosenbloom, Jeffry Opdyke, and Michael Sowiski have formed a team called “The Rims” that will be participating in a 275 mile bike tour called Braking The Cycle that will take place to benefit HIV/AIDS services provided by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York City.

To help raise money for their team’s efforts, the Rims are organizing a Fugazi covers project that has been given the full blessing of the seminal punk band. Anyone can participate and to to do so, all you have to do is get in touch with the group through the project’s website:

http://fugazicoversproject.wordpress.com/

For more information about the project, visit their FAQ and to see which songs have already been claimed, go here. We already see a number of local musicians taking part, including Gold Streets, Cholo, and members of Zero Spanish and The Song Corporation.

Photos: Gold Streets at Union Hall

March 11th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in SXSW, festivals + conferences, gold streets

Gold Streets is a a band we’ve seen and heard many times now. And on Friday, at Brooklyn’s Union Hall, they were especially in top form. There was something about the sound at the venue that night that particularly showcased their rather broad, impressive dynamic range — just as capable of playing hard and forceful as laid back and delicate. Here are some photos from their set, with more available on Flickr:

Gold Streets is playing three shows in Austin this week, including one official SXSW showcase. They’ll be playing again in NY in April, as well as premiering a new music video. Check out their MySpace for details.
