Announcement: chopshop CD Release Party presented by StereoactiveNYC

090207-chopshopchshow-web

Back when we were first starting to book bands for the Hot Rocks Party, we had Mancino booked to play a date and asked them if there was anyone in particular they’d like to play with. Their suggestion was chopshop. After listening to the band’s impressive first demos, we were interested and invited them to join the bill. And after hearing them play live at the show, we were convinced these guys were one extremely talented group of musicians. Eventually, they played a couple more StereoactiveNYC-sponsored events, but then, unfortunately, had to take a rather long hiatus from playing live due to some unfortunate circumstances.

So chopshop, at this point, has not played a show since late 2007, but has managed to make fine use of their time, having spent it in their studio crafting an eleven song LP. Hugs And Hand Shakes showcases the energetic, skilled band we were first introduced to nearly two years ago and manages to show off a range of dynamic arrangement, songwriting, and production skills only hinted at in those early —  still impressive — demos. Even without the ongoing history we have with the band, StereoactiveNYC would be proud to present the CD release party we’ve helped them to organize for this coming Saturday night. The band will be joined by friends Mancino, Gold Streets, and Coyote Eyes, with DJed music before, between, and after the bands courtesy of our friends over at The Music Slut.

Congratulations to chopshop for sticking with this and getting it done. And welcome back.

Photos: Mancino at The Delancey

March 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in live shows, mancino, photos

Mancino poked their collective head out of their practice space to play at The Delancey last Tuesday. On tap were some of our favorites, as well as a few new ones that we enjoyed quite a lot and look forward to hearing again. Here are some photos of the band, with more available on Flickr:

Photos: The Secret Life Of Sofia at The Delancey

March 4th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in live shows, mancino, photos, the secret life of sofia

Okay, we feel a little like our reviews of The Secret Life Of Sofia‘s shows have become cut and paste affairs. We say things like “they haven’t played in a while,” “perhaps the best show we’ve seen them play yet,” “really looking forward to that album they’ve been working on.” The thing is, those are phrases that pretty much always apply. Such was the case when they played at The Delancey last week. Guesting on flute was Leah Paul of The Bridesmaids and in for some keyboards and tambourine action was Nadim Issa of Mancino (who played right after TSLOS). Here are some photos from the show, with more available on Flickr:

And check out Ear Farm’s post about the show for more photos and a couple of videos.

By the way, that album they’ve been working on is something you should really be looking forward to.
