Union Hall Wins Support From Community Board 6

We were at the Community Board 6 meeting last night where the resolution to recommend non-renewal of Union Hall‘s liquor license was on the agenda. Not only was the resolution voted down with rather vocal support from a number of well-spoken supporters on the board who made a great case for the bar and arts venue, but a new resolution was made to recommend supporting the renewal of the license. This resolution passed with what appeared to be a solid majority.

The general opinion of the board members who supported Union Hall seemed to be that the owners of the venue have been good operators who have gone out of their way to try and accommodate their neighbors and that the neighbors who have complained about the venue have unfairly forgone mediation of their issues before calling for unwarranted punishment. Details about the issue and Union Hall’s efforts to address neighbors’ concerns can be found here.

As far as community board meetings go, the general turnout for this one was high and the turnout of supporters for Union Hall was quite impressive — all available seats were filled and people were standing along the walls. Surveying the attendees, we estimated that more than half of the non-board members in the room were there to support the venue.

As explained last night by the board’s chairperson, Richard Bashner, and other members, the issue of recommending or not recommending liquor license renewals to the State Liquor Authority is something relatively new to the body. It was gratifying to see our own community board carefully weigh the decision and come to a conclusion that we feel sets a fair-minded and just precedent for similar issues that may come up in the future.

After the meeting, a number of supporters gathered outside with signs and cheered the board members who had spoken on the venue’s behalf as they exited.

Please Support Union Hall

May 13th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in venue info

In case you haven’t heard, some people in Park Slope have begun attacking Union Hall as bad for the neighborhood — head to Gothamist to read about the controversy. StereoactiveNYC is based out of Park Slope and the venue and bar has been one of our favorites since it opened in the Summer of 2006. The accusations being made against it are ridiculous, and — quite possibly — underhanded. Today we received an email from some of our friends at Union Hall with info about how to help show support:

Tomorrow could change Brooklyn nightlife as we know it.

Community Board 6′s advisory board lead by Lou Sones (the owner of Brazen Head) is taking action against Union Hall of Park Slope. They are recommending the removal of their liquor license based on a group of about 5 people from Union street, with no facts generated to prove any violations. I repeat… THEY ARE TRYING TO TAKE AWAY UNION HALL’S LIQUOR LICENSE WITHOUT A SINGLE VIOLATION! If this is allowed it could set a chain-reaction through the night life scene. If they can deny the renewal of a liquor license for an establishment with no violations they will be able to close down anyone they like.

DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN!

The General Board will be meeting on this and other matters at the address and time listed bellow. Show up in numbers with signs stating your support for Union Hall and Brooklyn Nightlife. The press will be there and we have to put the pressure on

Borough Hall
Court Room / 6:30PM
209 Joralemon St
Brooklyn, NY

We urge everyone who is a fan of Union Hall and everyone who is a fan of good music and arts to please go to this meeting if they can to show support for a great establishment. Here are signs being passed around for supporters to print out (click image to open full-size version in a new window):

Galapagos Moving To DUMBO

From the New York Times:

In a move that has greater symbolic significance than mere real estate hopscotch, Galapagos Art Space, the pioneering bar and performing arts space that helped put Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on the cultural map, is moving a few neighborhoods down the East River, to Dumbo.

Galapagos, which has played host to a broad array of New York’s musicians, dancers, theater artists, performance artists, fine artists and burlesque dancers during its 12-year existence, is scheduled to move into the space, a 102-year-old, 10,000-square-foot former horse stable at 16 Main Street, in the spring or summer of 2008.

So, will DUMBO be the next place for music venues?
