(Still from The Road To Guantanamo)
It’s probably safe to assume that Click will rule the box office this weekend, but we’re really much more interested in Michael Winterbottom’s The Road To Guantanamo. The film — part documentary and part drama — is the story of the Tipton Three, three British Muslims who were detained in Afghanistan and held without charges at Guantanamo Bay for two years before their eventual release. Winterbottom has proven his ability to dramatize real events in interesting and meaningful ways before with films such as Welcome To Sarajevo, so we hope for no less here.
Director Yoji Yamada’s samuari trilogy sees its second installment released this week. The Hidden Blade, sequel to 2004′s Twilight Samurai, is about a samurai whose loaytly is tested by his relationship with a woman whom he’s saved from an abusive husband. It’s done well at the international festivals and the first film was an Academy Award nominee, so we expect this is a good bet.
Fans of Kids director Larry Clark have reason to be happy, as his new film,Wassup Rockers, opens this week. Not surprisingly, it’s about a group of kids causing trouble in the big city. This time it’s latino skater boys mixing it up with Beverly Hills and Hollywood type girls.
We’re willing to bet that somewhat middling reviews won’t keep Leonard Cohen fans away from the new documentary, Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man.
