Scrambler Seequill Release New Album / Show Tonight + mp3s

December 17th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in general, live shows, live this week, mp3s, releases

Scrambler Seequill - Secret Passageways

Whereas many bands seem to be concerned with taking something pretty-sounding and making it dissonant, Scrambler Seequill has an interesting way of taking dissonance and making it sound pretty. They’re adept at mixing different textures and sounds — big drums, electronic bits and blips, thoughtfully-played spaghetti western guitars, dreamy reverb vocals, string orchestration — as if assembling a collage made up of sounds they’ve torn apart and recomposed to their distinct liking along with whatever interesting outside fragments they’ve discovered in the process. There’s a certain sense of curiosity built in to much of the music, like they were constantly just trying things out as they went, that makes it all seem somewhat lighthearted even as there’s a sense of interesting murkiness that seems to come from the knowledge that maybe the chance they’re taking might not work out. But they try things out anyway and are better for it.

Scrambler Seequill is playing tonight at Littlefield to celebrate the release of the album. And here are a couple of preview tracks for you to sample:

mp3: “Rest For Now” by Scrambler Seequill

mp3: “One Design” by Scrambler Seequill

You can also get a couple of more free downloads and preview the entire album via bandcamp.

Serpent Power Festival This Sunday at Glasslands

February 26th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in festivals + conferences, live shows, live this week

090301-serpentpowerfest

In case you haven’t noticed, rock music is often dominated by men, which means groups fronted by men often get more attention than those fronted by women. We’re not really sure what the case is elsewhere, but there is a plethora of amazing female-fronted bands here in NYC/Brooklyn. We here at StereoactiveNYC may just take this for granted because we see and hear them as much as, if not more than those fronted by men. But we’re wholeheartedly in favor of anything that draws attention to the sensationally talented women playing music in this city, so we definitely suggest heading to Glasslands this Sunday, March 1st to check out the Serpent Power Festival.

The festival was put together by Scrambler Seequill and features female artists and female-fronted bands — including the Naked Hearts and She Keeps Bees, two StereoactiveNYC favorites, and Sharon Van Etten, who we’ve regrettably not seen solo yet even though we’ve been meaning to for quite some time. Also playing will be Sea Sick and PWRFL Power, who along with Scrambler Seequill, we have not seen live yet, but having come across them all online at some point and liking what we heard, we definitely suggest checking them out and seeing as many of the bands as you can.

Doors are at 7pm and Glasslands is at 289 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg. Here’s a map.

And you can sample mp3s of the Naked Hearts and She Keeps Bees on this event’s showlist page.
