The Song Corporation Releases PIRATES! // Listening Party Tomorrow

Listen to The Song Corporation‘s new full-length album, Pirates!, and you’ll hear a band that’s not only good at playing, but enjoys it and doesn’t care if you know it. One of the things we like about them is that they’ve never been afraid of letting their music be fun. Even when the lyrics are busy setting a scene that may be decidedly dire and grim, the music is often a contrast to that — not always, but often. They’re quite capable of letting the music get as dark and moody as the next indie band, but the way they’ve always been able to work in those contrasts or turn a beat or progression around into something lighter without anything ever falling apart or losing substance is not only impressive, but refreshing.

The band always easily strode the line between the noise and pop sides of indie and alternative. Their two EPs often brought to mind Sonic Youth or the Talking Heads. Those influences are definitely still evident, but, for some reason, Pirates! has us realizing the band’s probably been listening to Television for just as long.

The Song Corporation is releasing the album tomorrow and celebrating with a free listening party at The Delancey that we’re sponsoring. Check out the details, including drink specials, below. And if you can’t make it to the party to get a copy of the CD, it’s available at Insound and will be on iTunes soon. Here are a couple of tracks to check out:

“Just Like Us”
“We Found A Map”

Fugazi Covers Project: Musicians Wanted

May 15th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in gold streets, man in gray, recording, zero spanish

Christina DaCosta (whom you may know from Man In Gray), Phil Rosenbloom, Jeffry Opdyke, and Michael Sowiski have formed a team called “The Rims” that will be participating in a 275 mile bike tour called Braking The Cycle that will take place to benefit HIV/AIDS services provided by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York City.

To help raise money for their team’s efforts, the Rims are organizing a Fugazi covers project that has been given the full blessing of the seminal punk band. Anyone can participate and to to do so, all you have to do is get in touch with the group through the project’s website:

http://fugazicoversproject.wordpress.com/

For more information about the project, visit their FAQ and to see which songs have already been claimed, go here. We already see a number of local musicians taking part, including Gold Streets, Cholo, and members of Zero Spanish and The Song Corporation.

Live This Week: July 16-22

Plenty of shows this week. In fact, we have suggestions for six out of the next seven days. A couple of shows we’d particularly like to like to point out… Thursday night sees the return of some of our favorite musicians in the city as The Song Corporation‘s Kristie Redfield and Emma La Reina‘s Marta De Leon and Peter Janovsky join forces in a new group that, while it has no official name yet, has us pretty damn excited. And then, on Friday night, we’ve got our very own Hot Rocks Party featuring another exciting return — a reformed Americans UK, back together after more than a year of non-existence, joins other SANYC favorites Gold Streets and The Art Of Shooting, as well as a new interest of ours: Frauke.

Wrap-Up: Beg Yr Pardon #7, Presented By StereoactiveNYC

SANYC Program
(SANYC/BYP7 Show Program)

We’re finally recovered enough from Tuesday night’s party to take a look back at all the fun we had. It was a great night, with great music from all the bands and we’d like to thank the whole Beg Yr Pardon crew for letting us in on the fun in such a big way. It was a great collaboration we hope to repeat sometime soon.

Gold Streets
(Gold Streets)

The night got off to a great start with Gold Streets. Their live show surpassed even what we were expecting based on their EP, which we enjoy immensely itself. The energy in the room really got kicked up many a notch as they played and it was good to hear the songs we know from the EP. But with a set that included newer material, we can hardly wait for the full-length they’re in the process of finishing up. Judging by what we heard the other night, we expect it’s going to be a great album.

Western Civ
(Western Civ)

Next up was Western Civ. The boys from Alabama played a truly impressive set that went beyond even what we’d seen or heard from them previously. They’ve begun to work in more harmonies and moments of nuanced arrangement that build on what was already an impressive sound. And much like Gold Streets, they played some newer material that has us anxious to hear the new full-length they’re working on. Also, we were happy to learn that the band plans to move to Chapel Hill, NC after the new year, which will put them just a bit closer to New York and will hopefully make it more likely that they’ll be able to return soon.

The Secret Life Of Sofia
(The Secret Life Of Sofia)

The third band of the night was The Secret Life Of Sofia, who impressed us with the way they so naturally transition from up-tempo shakers to more mellow and introspective songs. It was an excellent display of musicianship — just as we’ve come to expect from the band — as well as a great way to keep the night going. We especially enjoyed the expansion of sound and instrumentation they’ve made of late, and look forward to seeing and hearing what they do next.

A Place To Bury Strangers
(A Place To Bury Strangers)

The final band of the night was A Place To Bury Strangers, and, to no one’s surprise, they came on strong and never let up. The aural onslaught of their sonically overdriven sound served as the perfect culmination to a night of high energy and skilled musicianship. Numerous layers and various textures of feedback, fuzz, percussive hits, throbbing bass, and pure kinetic energy reached out, grabbed and shook us. We were glad to hear our old favorites like “My Weakness” and “I’ve Lived My Life To Stand In The Shadow Of Your Heart,” along with some material we’d not heard previously.

Danny of The Big Sleep
(Danny of The Big Sleep)

Switching off DJ duties with us through the night was Danny of The Big Sleep”. He played lots of great music, ranging from The Rapture to Aaliyah, that made it easy to keep moving between the live bands. We don’t have a full listing of his sets through the night, but here’s what we contributed to the mix:

Bjork – “Human Behavior”
The Embarrassment – “Sex Drive”
Brownbelt – “Boxcars”
Them – “I Can Only Give You Everything”
Cody ChesnuTT – “The World Is Coming To My Party”
The Damned – “So Messed Up”
The Sonics – “Strychnine”
Unsacred Hearts – “Somewhere Deep In NYC”
Bob Dylan – “Subterranean Homesick Blues”
Takka Takka – “Enough”
Pavement – “Flux=Rad”
The Problem – “The Atom Beat”
The Clash – “I Fought The Law”
The Song Corporation – “The Bug Speaks”
The Shangri-Las – “Radio Spot #3 – Good Taste Tips: Gift Receiving”
Mission Of Burma – “Academy Fight Song”
Oxford Collapse – “1991 Kids”
LCD Soundsystem – “Give It Up”
DraculaZombieUSA – Parallel Lives Perpendicular High Fives”
TV On The Radio – “Wolf Like Me”
Asobi Seksu – “New Years”
Led Zeppelin – “Trampled Under Foot”
Flock Of Seagulls – “I Ran (So Far Away)”

More photos from the show are available on Flickr.

Beg Yr Pardon #4 Wrap-Up

Beg Yr Pardon continues to attract a good deal of attention four shows into its run. And for good reason. Tuesday night’s show delivered on the promise of the previous shows, with great sets from all the bands were were able to see. Of course, our favorite set was by The Song Corporation, who, as previously stated, grow more impressive with each performance. We were glad to hear some of our favorite TSC songs the other night, including “The Bug Speaks,” and “A Carpententer’s Cup,” as well as some newer material thjat we’re hoping to hear on their now-in-the-mix, upcoming full-length. Our only wish is that they’d played “Raisin Bran In The Sun,” a truly impressive lyrical barrage that we’ve come to admire since its release on the Raisin Bran EP.

Here’s some more on the show from a few of our favorite blogs…

Crackers United, who DJed the first half of the night, saw and liked both Susu and TSC.

Fluxblog DJed the second half of the night. We agree with him that TSC’s “We Found A Map” (at least we assume that’s the song’s title) was particularly impressive.

Ear Farm has a great wrap of the whole show, saying this about TSC:

Their show was a blast, had a pretty sweet balance between mellow songs/female vocals and more rocking songs/male vocals, and they had all kinds of people dancing and grooving along…a bunch of people got up on the stage with the band and stuff too. Yeah, I’ll be going to see them again soon – one Song Corporation show made me a fan.

Tonight: BYP#4 Featuring The Song Corporation

July 18th, 2006 | 1 Comment | Posted in live shows, parties, the song corporation

060718-byp7.png

It’s Tuesday, which means there’s a fifty percent chance that there’s a bi-weekly Beg Yr Pardon party tonight. And, yes, there is. Tonight is BYP#4 and it features one of our favorite bands, The Song Corporation. Those guys are better every time we see them and they’re incredibly nice people as well. And all three previous BYP parties have been a blast. Of course, they have a lot going for them — in addition to great bands, they offer excellent guest DJs, free baked goods, free beer from 11:30pm-12:30am, and BBQ on the roof for an extra $5. It’s like one stop shopping for the necessities of life, right?

Here’s a track from The Song Corporation’s excellent Raisin Bran EP:
